Thick and thin line technique is a way to enhance the presentation of design drawings. It makes sketches ‘pop out’ from the page and more three-dimensional. This article introduces students to this technique and contains a free printable worksheet to help revise this material.
Rules for thick and thin line technique
- If you can see both faces that form an edge = thin
- If you can only see one face that forms an edge = thick
It is sensible to start by drawing dark lines around all the outside edges.

Sample examination questions (IGCSE Paper 5)
Examiner comment: This part of the question asked candidates to apply thick and thin line technique to the mould for the plastic tray. The principle is that where only one edge is seen producing the corner, a thick line is applied. All edges where two sides are seen producing the corner are left as thin lines. Many candidates showed good knowledge of this technique and gained high marks.
