[recognise and select methods of making temporary and permanent joints in graphic products using adhesives – IG]

[use various methods of fabrication and fitting to join parts of products, permanently or temporarily

understand how sizes of screws, nails, nuts and bolts are specified

understand the processes of soldering, brazing, welding, riveting/pop riveting

understand methods of carcase, stool and frame construction using permanent and temporary joints

use holding devices, formers and jigs (for sawing, drilling and bending) to assist joining and assembly

understand the use of knock-down (KD) fittings for use with manufactured boards such as chipboard,
including one-piece and two-piece corner blocks, scan fittings, cam lock and leg fastenings

understand where to use a wide range of pre-manufactured components, including screws, nails, nuts, bolts, hinges and catches – IG]

Discuss 3D printing, welding/joining, adhesive bonding, and other construction/assembly processes. –

Fabrication is essentially making something by adding components or materials together rather than removing material (which would be subtractive manufacturing, like milling or routing processes).

Also link to permanent/temporary joint discussion.

Fabrication: the process of constructing something by combining or assembling different parts or materials together.

Custom part creation

[How similar and dissimilar materials are joined:
– permanently
○ with nails and pins
○ by heat (soldering, brazing and welding)
○ with adhesives ***Link to article***]

[temporarily
○ nuts and bolts
○ screws
○ knock down (KD) fittings
○ standard components (plastic rivets/split pins/staples/Velcro®)
○ tabs/flaps/locking tabs used on thin sheet material. – A2]
