The Injection Moulding Process (with diagram)

injection moulding process diagram
  • Plastic powder or granules forced via a screw thread through a heater and into mould;
    • Mould is warmed before injecting, and injection is fast, so plastic doesn’t harden before the mould is full;
    • Widely used, especially in manufacture of electronic product casing;
    • Advantages:
      • Pressure maintained for a short time to prevent the material creeping back when setting, preventing shrinkage and hollows – gives a better finish;
      • High production rates possible;
      • Consistent quality achieved;
      • Accurate dimensions are achieved.
    • Disadvantages:
      • High cost to set up moulds and machinery;
      • Not good for short runs.
